Review of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is an older book but one well worth reading or rereading. It’s a nonfiction that reads as a spellbinding novel. In May 1981 shots were fired in Mercer House, one of the grand old mansions of Savannah Georgia. Successful antique dealer, Jim Williams shot and killed a rebellious young man who worked part-time for him. Was it murder or self-defense?

In telling the story of the trial of Jim Williams, the author delights us with an inside look at life in this complicated old Southern town. Berendt introduces us to a variety of unusual characters such as: the society ladies of the ‘Married Women’s Card Club”, the aging, pampered southern belle, a strange man who carries around a bottle of poison strong enough to poison the whole city, the voodoo princess, Minerva, enlisted to aid Williams in his trial, the bold and outspokenly funny drag queen and many more. This book will definitely keep you intrigued and entertained for hours.
